A bursary is an annual payment, paid monthly, awarded to assist with day to day living costs whilst you are studying; it also includes the cost of your tuition fees for the course you wish to attend.

Your course tuition fees will be paid by the NHS, so any amount of bursary that you are actually awarded will be for your living costs and not for you to meet the cost of your fees.

We pay the standard course tuition fee for medical/dental students directly to your university.

An NHS Bursary award is not subject to income tax deductions or National Insurance contributions and is not considered a salary or wage.

The means tested bursary is calculated using either your own, your parents? income, or that of your spouse, civil partner or partner.

This applies to Degree level students who commenced training before 1 September 2012 and all students who start courses on or after 1 September 2012.
