Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the growth and development of the teeth and jaws, and treatment to align irregular teeth / improve incorrect bites.

Within the primary care sector, NHS orthodontic treatment is provided under an Additional Services contract, which has been agreed between a Primary Care Commissioning Organisation (PCO) and the contractor.

Further information regarding the provision of orthodontic treatment within NHS primary care dental services is available online (The National Health Service (General Dental Services Contracts) Regulations 2005 Statutory Instrument 2005 No. 3361 and The National Health Service (Dental Charges) Regulations 2005 Statutory Instrument 2005 No. 3477).

Orthodontics is also available in the NHS secondary care sector (hospital service), however this is normally for more complex cases that have been referred by a primary care provider.
