Follow the guidance for:

  • removal
  • addition
  • repair or replacement

Removal

If an examination has been provided and a clasp is removed from a non-orthodontic appliance, it would be part of a band 1 Course of Treatment (CoT).

If the patient attends in pain and removal of the clasp is necessary to resolve this, the treatment is appropriate to a band 4 urgent claim.

If a clasp is being removed from a recently provided appliance, the removal would be considered part of the original CoT and no additional claim can be made.

Addition

If an examination has been provided and a clasp is added to a non-orthodontic appliance, it would be part of a band 2 CoT.

If a clasp is being added to a recently provided appliance, this addition would be considered part of the original CoT and no additional claim can be made.

Repair or replacement

If an existing denture has a clasp which is being replaced, it would be appropriate as a charge exempt item for free denture repair.

If the denture had only been provided recently, a further claim would not be considered appropriate as the alteration would be considered to be part of the original treatment.
