CCA can only be paid to registered or officially recognised forms of childcare provision.

Child is looked after by a relative

CCA cannot be paid to a registered child-minder who would normally have parental responsibility for the child, such as your:

  • spouse
  • partner
  • civil partner

CCA can be paid to another relative such as a grandparent or aunt, who does not have parental responsibility for the child, if:

  • they’re a registered childcare provider
  • the childcare is provided away from the child's home
  • the care is not solely for the related child - they also look after other children, not including their own

Child is looked after by a nanny or au pair

You can claim CCA if the nanny or au pair is registered on the voluntary part of the Ofsted Childcare Register (OCR) or other UK country's equivalent such as:

  • The Voluntary Approval Scheme for Wales
  • The Home Childcare Approval Scheme for Northern Ireland
  • The Care Inspectorate for Scotland
