You may be able to claim reimbursement for the total cost of temporary accommodation while attending your practice placement.

This is subject to a maximum amount.

If your placement started on or after 1 September 2023, you can claim a maximum of either:

  • £82.50 per night for commercial accommodation such as hotels, B and B's, lettings agents or estate agents
  • £37.50 per night for non-commercial accommodation such as hospital accommodation, staying with friends or family not including your parents, private renting from an individual landlord or university halls

Any booking or admin fee is included in the maximum amount allowed for your accommodation. It will not be refunded separately.

Your university must authorise all placement claims.

You must include evidence of your accommodation costs with your application such as:

  • credit or debit card receipts - must show the establishment name, the date of payment and the amount paid
  • invoices - must ideally include your name, the overall cost and be on headed paper or include the name or logo of the establishment
  • tenancy agreements - must include your name and the cost such as monthly rent

You can claim towards the cost of one return journey each week between your normal term time address and your temporary accommodation while you're on placement. You can only be reimbursed the excess daily cost when compared to your normal daily travel to and from university.

Travel costs between your temporary accommodation and your placement site may be claimed as well. You can only be reimbursed the excess daily cost of these journeys when compared to your normal daily travel to and from university.

You can only claim costs that are in your name.

If you’re not named on any evidence sent in to prove accommodation costs, you’ll not be reimbursed for these expenses.
