This will depend on how long the extension period is for.

Extension is for 24 weeks or less

Your previous year’s bursary award is used to calculate an extension of 24 weeks or less. The award is divided by the number of days in the previous academic year and multiplied by the number of days required for the extension.

The bursary for your extension, including any additional allowances will be paid in the usual manner. If payments are not possible by the same payment schedule used to pay your existing bursary, you will be paid your extension as a one off whole payment.

Extension is for more than 24 weeks

If the extension is more than 24 weeks, a new academic year is used so you will need to apply for the bursary for the new academic year.

Your bursary for your extension will be paid as a normal bursary.

If the extension takes place within your academic year, you'll only be eligible for an extra weeks allowance payment as you will have already had your whole award for the year.

For example in the academic year September 14 to August 15, if your term dates end in June , you will have had the full bursary by June for basic and additional allowances. However if your original term dates (study weeks) have increased, an additional extra weeks allowance payment may be due.

If your extension enters a new academic year, all elements of the award can then be paid.

Please note that all course extensions must be authorised by both your University and Health Education England (HEE) and this will not always include the payment of tuition fees.
