This depends on how long the extension period is for.

Students are not automatically entitled to an extension.

The current scheme regulations state 'If a student cannot complete the course in the time normally required for reasons other than maternity, maternity support or adoption leave, an NHS Bursary may be extended for up to 12 months to allow the student to complete the course. But in these circumstances an extension will only be granted if the BSA, after consulting the higher education institution and the course commissioner, conclude that there is a reasonable prospect of the student qualifying and, where the course has been commissioned by the NHS, that the commissioner is content to fund any additional cost of commissioning the additional tuition.'

All course extensions must be authorised by both your university and Health Education England (HEE).

They'll not always include the payment of tuition fees.

Childcare payments will never be automatically paid for a period of extension. A new Childcare Allowance (CCA) application form must be completed regardless of the extension length.

An extension may only be paid for educational time spent in attendance on the course at a Higher Education Institute (HEI) or on a clinical placement.

If your university agree to an extension, they must send in an Extension Request Form (BUR102) along with confirmation the extension has been authorised by HEE. This confirms the period and reason for extension.

This can be sent no more than 6 weeks in advance of the extension.

Extension is for 24 weeks or less

You do not need to complete a new application even if you've had more than one extension period and the total adds up to more than 24 weeks.

Your bursary will be automatically paid for the period of the extension.

If you're completing an extension immediately after a period of withdrawal, you must complete a new application regardless of the extension period. This will be classed as a return to study rather than an extension.

Your university must send us a Resumer Form (BUR101R).

How will the extension be paid

Your bursary will be automatically paid for the period of the extension and calculated using your previous year’s bursary award.

The award is divided by the number of days in the previous academic year and multiplied by the number of days needed for the extension.

The bursary for your extension including any additional allowances will be paid in the usual manner.

If payments are not possible by the same payment schedule used to pay your existing NHS Bursary, you'll be paid your extension as a one-off payment.

Extension is for more than 24 weeks

You must complete a new application and reapply for all means tested elements of your NHS Bursary.

When making your extension application, make sure you select your course details in line with the cohort you're changing to.

If you're extending your course but are not changing to a recognised cohort because your university is tailoring an individual timetable for your extension, you must enter your original final year course details.

These details can be amended as necessary when the Extension Request Form (BUR102) is received from your university.

How will the extension be paid

Your bursary for your extension will be paid as a normal bursary.

If the extension takes place within your academic year, you're only eligible for an extra weeks allowance payment as you'll have already had your whole award for the year.

If your extension enters a new academic year, all elements of the award can be paid.
