This depends on if you have access to Pensions Online (POL).

Check the member’s pension record is updated to the end of the last Scheme year by completing an SD55 form.

If you have access to POL, you can request an estimate through the ‘Memberzone’ section.

If you cannot request the estimate through POL, an AW295 form must be completed.

Members you must submit an AW295 form for include:

  • members who’ve achieved maximum service
  • members with restricted service
  • members with practitioner membership
  • members with a salary below £5000 or above £200,000
  • Pension Credit members awarded benefits from a Pension Sharing Order
  • members who would like to take or have previously taken partial retirement

If you’re requesting an estimate for partial retirement purposes, you must enter the percentage the member wants to take and the date they would like the estimate to in part 4 of the AW295 form.

If you get an ‘Excluded from POL’ or ‘Data cleanse’ error message, select ‘OK’ to send an electronic request to us. You’ll receive a notification to say this has been completed within 48 hours.

There are estimates that cannot be calculated on POL. These will automatically request a manual calculation.

These include:

  • male nurses with membership before 17 May 1990
  • Additional Pension purchases
  • members with a pension subject to a debit from a Pension Sharing Order.

If an employee requests a redundancy estimate, use the redundancy calculator on our website.

If you request a manual estimate through POL, this will be posted to you. You’ll receive a notification on the ‘Noticeboard’ section of POL to confirm the estimate has been completed.

Membership over 40 years for Special Class (SC) members and 45 years for all members

Any estimates where more than 40 years membership at age 55 for SC members or 45 years overall is shown, must be sent to us to be checked.

Forward the estimate to nhsbsa.pensionsemployers@nhsbsa.nhs.uk with the heading 'Maximum Service'.
