The following funding elements may be available to you from the first year of your course.

Placement Travel Allowance (PTA)

PTA is a non-income assessed allowance to support you with your placement costs.

A full-time student will receive £862.50 per academic year.

A part time student will receive a pro rata amount, based on the length of your course.

If you’re allocated a capped bursary place and eligible for a Basic Bursary, your PTA entitlement will automatically be included in your award.

If you’re not allocated a capped bursary place, PTA will be the only funding you receive.

Additional Social Work bursary funding

These allowances are only available if you've been allocated a capped bursary place.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees are a non-income assessed contribution.

A full-time student will receive up to £4,052 per academic year.

A part-time student will receive up to £2,026 per academic year.

If your university or college charges a higher amount for tuition fees, you’ll need to pay the difference in these costs.

Basic grant

The basic grant is a non-income assessed award to support you with your general living expenses. This will automatically include the PTA.

The rates cover a 52 week period during the academic year.

A full-time student will receive £3,362.50 if you attend a university outside of London.

A full-time student will receive £3,762.50 if you attend a university inside of London.

A part time student will receive a pro rata amount, based on the length of your course.

Maintenance grant

The maintenance grant is an additional award to support you with your general living expenses. This award is income assessed.

The rates cover a 52 week period during the academic year.

A full-time student will receive up to £2,721 if you attend a university outside of London.

A full-time student will receive up to £4,201 if you attend a university inside of London.

A part time student will receive a pro rata amount, based on the length of your course.

Childcare Allowance (CCA)

CCA is an income assessed allowance to support you with any childcare costs you pay to a registered childcare provider.

We can contribute 85% of your costs per week, up to a maximum of:

  • £155.24 per week for one child in childcare
  • £266.15 per week for two or more children in childcare.

Part time students can claim childcare costs at the same full-time rate.

Adult Dependants Allowance (ADA)

ADA is an income assessed allowance to support an adult that’s wholly or mainly financially dependent on you.

The rates cover a 52 week period during the academic year.

A full-time student will receive up to £2,757.

A part time student will receive a pro rata amount, based on the length of your course.

Parent's Learning Allowance (PLA)

PLA is an income assessed allowance to support any children that are wholly or mainly financially dependent on you.

The rates cover a 52 week period during the academic year.

A full-time student will receive up to £1,573.

A part time student will receive a pro rata amount, based on the length of your course.

Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs)

DSA is a non-income assessed allowance to support you if you have additional costs whilst in training, because of a disability or medical condition.

The amount of DSAs will be based on the recommendations in your assessment of study needs report.

The maximum full-time rates during the academic year are:

  • Non-Medical Helpers Allowance £20,725 per year
  • Specialist Equipment Allowance £5,212 for the duration of the course
  • General Allowance £1,741 per year
  • Travel Allowance over and above any public transport costs.

These rates are non-income assessed and are only available if you have a capped bursary place.

The maximum part-time rates during the academic year are:

  • Non-Medical Helpers Allowance £15,543 per year
  • Specialist Equipment Allowance £5,212 for the duration of the course
  • General Allowance £1,305 per year
  • Travel Allowance over and above any public transport costs.
