An AUR is a planned face to face consultation between a pharmacist or appliance contractor and a patient to discuss the appliance or device the patient is currently using.

The review aims to help increase the patient's knowledge and understanding of their appliance, while allowing them to discuss any queries or concerns they have.

How to register

Before you can conduct AURs, you must:

  1. Complete an Advanced Services Declaration Form.  
  2. Notify your NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSEI) regional team.
  3. Provide NHSEI with details of the pharmacist or specialist nurse who’ll be performing AURs.
  4. Comply with the Terms of Service for Essential Services.
  5. Have an acceptable system of clinical governance.
  6. Have a standard operating procedure in place.
  7. Have a compliant consultation area.

Requirements when providing AURs

Once you've successfully registered to conduct AURs, you need to meet certain requirements:

  1. The service must be provided, where reasonably possible, within two working days of the patient requesting a review or agreeing to one.
  2. Verbal consent should be obtained and a record of that made in the pharmacy’s clinical record for the service.
  3. An AUR record form (APPL04) must be completed. 
  4. You must inform the patient in writing there’ll be a record of the AUR. This information needs shared with the patient's GP and any nurse practising with the GP who is providing relevant primary medical services to the patient (if applicable). 
  5. Keep a record of the AUR for at least 12 months or longer depending on the requirements of your NHSEI regional team.
  6. Declare the number of AURs carried out each month on the FP34C submission form.

AUR payment

A fee of £28 is payable for an AUR conducted at premises or by telephone or video link managed by the pharmacy or appliance contractor.

A fee of £54 is payable for an AUR conducted at the user’s home.

If, within a 24-hour period, reviews are conducted for several users living at the same location, the appliance or pharmacy contractor may claim £54 for the first review and £28 for each subsequent review.

In England, the total number of AURs that an appliance or pharmacy contractor may claim fees for will be limited to one for every 35:

  • Part IXA, qualifying items dispensed
  • Part IXB items dispensed
  • Part IXC items dispensed

This will be for the period commencing 1 April and end on 31 March in any one year.
