An NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate entitles the holder and any dependent children named in the tax credit assessment who you receive Child Tax Credits for, to:

  • free NHS prescriptions
  • free NHS dental treatment
  • free NHS sight tests
  • a voucher towards the cost of glasses and contact lenses
  • free NHS wigs and fabric supports such as spinal or abdominal supports or surgical brassieres supplied through a hospital
  • in England, travel to receive NHS treatment if referred by a doctor or dentist
  • in Scotland, travel to a hospital to receive necessary NHS treatment
  • in Wales, travel to receive NHS treatment whilst under the care of a consultant

You cannot claim the cost of travel to visit your GP or dentist for a routine appointment or check up.

Tax Credits ending April 2025

Tax Credits are being replaced by Universal Credit from April 2025. Tax Credit claimants will receive a Migration Notice letter from The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) about moving onto Universal Credit.

To be entitled to help with your NHS health costs through Universal Credit, you must meet the qualifying conditions.
