If an NHS Pension Scheme member dies while in pensionable employment after taking partial retirement, there are 2 elements considered in calculating the lump sum on death benefit:
- the lump sum on death benefit for the benefits which have not been claimed
- if it's been in payment for less than 5 years, the lump sum on death benefit for the partial retirement benefits
The lump sum on death for the benefits not claimed as partial retirement will be 2 times the member's reckonable pay. This is adjusted by the proportion of those benefits to the total value of all their Scheme benefits.
The lump sum on death benefit for the partial retirement benefits will be the lesser of either:
- 5 times the pension minus the amount of pension actually paid
- 2 times the appropriate percentage of the reckonable pay used in the calculation of the most recent partial retirement benefits
This is adjusted by the proportion of partial retirement benefits to the total value of all the member's Scheme benefits, minus the amount of lump sum taken.
Adult dependant's pension
The initial pension will be calculated as 2 elements reflecting the rules relating to death before and after retirement.
After the short-term pension has ended, the member's spouse or partner will get an adult dependant's pension payable for life.
