EPPB allows members who leave the NHS Pension Scheme on or after 31 March 2000 to claim their deferred benefits before their normal pension age (NPA). The benefits cannot be claimed earlier than your minimum pension age.

Pension benefits paid before reaching NPA are reduced as they’re being paid early. This is known as EPPB.

You can apply to take EPPB if you:

  • have deferred benefits in the Scheme
  • were in pensionable NHS employment on or after 31 March 2000
  • want to take your deferred benefits before your NPA

You can choose to take your benefits from age:

  • 50 if you were a member of the 1995 Section and joined before 6 April 2006
  • 55 if you joined on or after 6 April 2006 or were a member of the 2008 Section or 2015 Scheme

If you have membership in both the 1995 Section and 2008 Section, the earliest you can choose to take your benefits from is age 55.
