Dental practitioners working under General Dental Services (GDS) or Personal Dental Services (PDS) contracts are automatically opted into the NHS Pension Scheme if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Self-employed performers must submit their Net Pensionable Earnings (NPE) annually on Compass. Make sure your Annual Reconciliation Report (ARR) is accurate as this determines pensionable pay.

Employed performers have pension contributions automatically deducted from their salary and submitted by their employer.

Locum dentist

You can join the NHS Pension Scheme if you're a qualified dentist working under a GDS or PDS contract on an occasional basis.

You cannot use earnings from an agency to pay into the NHS Pension Scheme.

Limited company

Dental practitioners or performers who’ve set themselves up as a limited company cannot contribute to the NHS Pension Scheme.
