VSO is a voluntary charity which may be covered under provisions which allow employees of certain non-NHS organisations to remain in the NHS Pension Scheme. This is known as Section 7(2) Direction Status.
If you're going to work abroad for VSO or the British Red Cross, you can apply to remain in the NHS Pension Scheme.
If possible, the application must be made by your employer or sponsoring body. For VSO, you may need to apply individually.
Your application must include documentation confirming:
- your current or previous NHS employment and dates of membership in the NHS Pension Scheme
- details of your VSO placement including the start date, location, and nature of work
You must apply within 3 months of starting your new job.
During the previous 12 months, you must have contributed to the NHS Pension Scheme.
If there are extenuating circumstances, we may apply discretion to extend the 3-month time limit for applying. Each case will be judged on it's individual circumstances.
Overseas employment in developing or war-torn countries
Continued Scheme membership may be considered for some overseas employments in developing or war-torn countries.
If you want your employment to be considered, contact us giving as much information as possible.
