If you’re carrying out jury duty you can pay into the NHS Pension Scheme.

Your employer will confirm if your jury duty leave is paid or unpaid. If the leave is paid, pension contributions will be paid as normal.

If your jury duty is considered unpaid leave, the rules are the same as an authorised career break. This must be arranged before the break to continuously collect the employee contributions from the member.

Arrears of pension contributions cannot be accumulated.

The employer contributions will continue to be paid by the employer if:

  • the members contributions are being paid
  • the break is no longer than 6 months

If the jury duty is longer than 6 months, the regulations allow a member who has already paid contributions continuously during the first 6 months to continue to pension the leave for a further period of up to 18 months.

If the member wishes to contribute for more than 6 months, they’ll be responsible for both the employee and employer contributions.

The contributions will be based on your salary.
