If you are a Doctor in training receiving either Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) or Occupational Maternity Pay (OMP) and your contract finishes, you may need to move between employers.

If your contract expires prior to the 11th week before the Expected Week of Childbirth (EWC), you will normally be required to move to your next placement before commencing maternity leave.

Under these circumstances, your SMP payment will continue to be pensionable via your previous employer.  However, no employer contributions will be due from your previous employer, as employer pensions contributions only remain payable if you are in receipt of normal pay.

Your new employer will record your pensionable earnings and contributions when you move to them and your previous employer will need to liaise with them to ensure all contributions are reflected during your leave.

Please note we can only advise on payments which affect your pension and we are unable to advise on any other payments.
