A price concession is a new, fixed price for the month which is higher than that in the Drug Tariff.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) could consider setting a price concession for products listed in Part VIIIA and Part VIIIB where they’re available above the set Drug Tariff reimbursement price.

Reimbursement is automatically set at the concessionary price rather than the Drug Tariff listed price. There’s no need for any endorsement.

Applications are made in month and once the price concession has been announced, it only lasts for the month in which it’s granted.

The list of concessionary items applies to doctors and pharmacies.

Price concessions will apply to all electronic prescriptions submitted in a month for which a concession is granted. The concession will be applied in line with the EPS timescales for submission.

Retrospective top-up payment for concessionary prices

The DHSC grant a retrospective top-up payment to the concessionary prices every quarter. This is granted 3 quarters before it will be paid.

The top-up is applied automatically for products listed in Part VIIIE.

The first retrospective top-up paid in April 2024 will reflect activity during April to September 2023.
