You can add a partner and any children, also called ‘dependants’, to your application.
Once you've submitted your application, you'll receive an automated email confirming your application has been successful.
Applying for a partner
Your partner must live with you at the same address to include them as a dependant on your application.
They must have a valid National Insurance number (NINO) to apply for a UK GHIC online.
If your partner does not have a valid NINO, send the details of your application to our helpdesk using our online form.
Applying for a child
Children must be under age 18 at the time of the application and live with you.
You can use the online portal to apply for a dependant UK GHIC for your foster child.
Adding a dependant
To add a dependant to your existing UK GHIC application, send the details to our helpdesk and include your dependants:
- full name
- date of birth
- UK address
- moving date of when they moved to that address
- nationality
- relationship to you
- NINO, if applicable
Their entitlement will expire on the same day as the main applicant.
Applicants who are unable to make their own application
You can apply for a UK GHIC for somebody else if they're not able to do so themselves by:
You must confirm that you have authority to act on the applicant’s behalf and provide evidence of this. The evidence we can accept is either a:
- power of attorney
- Court of Protection (COP)
- letter from a medical professional confirming the applicant is unable to deal with their own affairs - this must be on header paper and confirm their GMC number
- a letter of authority (LOA)
A LOA must include:
- full name of the main applicant
- date of birth of the main applicant
- first line of address and postcode of the main applicant
- third-party’s full name
- third-party's date of birth, or the month and year they started acting as the authorised third party
- main applicant's relationship to the third-party or a password the third-party would need to quote when contacting us
- email address or telephone number the third-party will use to contact us
- signature of the main applicant - this can be a wet or electronic signature

Other applications
Send the details of the application to our helpdesk if you're applying for a:
- child who lives in a residential care home under the care of a local authority
- pupil who lives in a boarding school
