When you apply for a UK GHIC, you can add a partner and any children, also called ‘dependants’, to your application.

Once you've submitted your application, you'll receive an automated email confirming your application has been successful.

Applying for a partner

Your partner must live with you at the same address to include them as a dependant on your application.

Your partner must have a valid National Insurance (NI) number to apply for a UK GHIC online.

If your partner does not have a valid NI number, send the details of your application to our helpdesk using our online form.

Applying for a child

Children must be under 18 at the time of application and you must be their legal guardian and live with you.

Adding a dependant

To add a dependant to your existing UK GHIC or UK European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) application, send the details to our helpdesk and include your dependants:

  • full name
  • date of birth
  • UK address
  • date they moved to that address
  • nationality
  • relationship to you
  • national insurance number, if applicable

Their entitlement will expire on the same day as the main applicant.

Other applications

Send the details of the application to our helpdesk if you are applying for:

  • a child who lives in a care home
  • a pupil who lives in a boarding school
