If you’re leaving the UK to work as an au pair or nanny in a European Union (EU) country Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Montenegro, you may be eligible for a UK GHIC.

This card will be valid for the first 12 months you're a resident in the country.

To apply for a UK GHIC, you must not have healthcare cover provided by:

  • another EU country
  • Switzerland
  • Norway
  • Iceland
  • Liechtenstein
  • Montenegro

You'll not be able to make an application as an au pair or nanny using the online portal.

Email your application to nhsbsa.ghicapplicationsohs@nhsbsa.nhs.uk and include one of the following pieces of evidence:

  • a copy of your signed or dated contract of employment showing your start date
  • a copy of a letter from your employer which confirms your start date

Your GHIC will be valid for the first 12 months you're a resident in the country. After 12 months, you must get healthcare cover in the country you’re working in.

If you already hold a valid UK GHIC, you must send this evidence to us and return your current card to:
