If you’re studying in the European Union (EU), Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, you may be eligible for a UK EHIC if you’re either:

  • an EU national
  • a UK national who was studying in the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland before 1 January 2021
  • a non-UK or EU national with limited or indefinite leave to remain. You need to have started your course before 1 January 2021

If you're a non-UK or EU national student, you can apply online.

Non-UK or EU national students cannot use this card for treatment in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein unless one of these countries is your country of study.

To apply for a UK EHIC if you're an EU national, email nhsbsa.ehicapplicationsohs@nhsbsa.nhs.uk and include:

  • the name and address of the UK educational institution if you're travelling as part of your course
  • the address of where you're studying in the EU
  • your address in the UK
  • details of the qualification you're studying for
  • the dates your course started and is due to finish

If you started your course after 1 January 2021 or you're planning to study in an EU country, you must apply for a student UK Global Health Insurance Card (UK GHIC).

You cannot use this card for treatment in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein unless one of these countries is your country of study.
