You must complete an SD502 form to opt out.

Complete ‘Part 1’ of the form and send it to your employer to complete ‘Part 2’.

You’ll be opted out of the Scheme from the first day of the next full pay period unless you ask to opt out from a later date.

If your SD502 is received before the end of your first pay period, you’ll be treated as never being a member of the Scheme.

If you opt out with less than 2 years membership, you can apply for a refund.

You must speak to your employer if you want to know the date when you opted out.

Read more information about opting out of the NHS Pension Scheme on our website.

Multiple posts

If you’re an Officer member and work in more than one part-time post, you can choose which posts you would like to opt out from.

If you’re a Practitioner member you must opt out of all of your Practitioner posts. You can continue to contribute to the Scheme for Officer and Locum posts.
