The PFS is an advanced service that replaced the Community Pharmacist Consultation Service (CPCS).
The PFS has 3 elements:
- Clinical pathways
- Urgent repeat medicine supply
- NHS referrals for minor illness
The PFS includes 7 new clinical pathways. This allows pharmacists to offer advice and prescribe NHS medicines to treat:

| sore throat | 5 years and over |
| acute otitis media | 1 to 17 years |
| infected insect bites | 1 year and over |
| impetigo | 1 year and over |
| shingles | 18 years and over |
| uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women | 16 to 64 years |
