This depends on where you live and where you want to study.
Living in England but study in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland
We may be able to fund you if you ordinarily live in England and want to attend an approved social work course in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. This is subject to you meeting standard eligibility criteria and your university or college's capped bursary place allocation.
British Overseas Territories
Even if you have settled status in the UK due to holding a British or EU passport, you are not eligible for Social Work Bursary funding if you've not been resident in the UK for the 3 years before the start of your course.
UK residence is defined as living in:
- England
- Scotland
- Wales
- Northern Ireland
- the Channel Islands
You can apply for tuition fee funding if you've been living in the UK, the EEA, Switzerland or the overseas territories for the past three years.
Temporary absence from the UK
You may be eligible if you’re normally resident in the UK and can show that your absence from the UK in the last 3 years was temporary.
Each case will be considered individually and supporting evidence must be provided.
You can send any of the following documents to prove temporary or occasional absence from the UK:
- evidence of temporary employment abroad of either yourself or your parents, spouse, or partner, such as contract of employment or letter from employer
- evidence of continued links to the UK, such as liability for UK tax, or if a home was maintained during the period abroad, ongoing mortgage or council tax payments, regular return visits to the UK
- evidence of armed forces personnel on active service such as payslips, letter from employer
- visitor’s visas
- any other evidence not listed above that you feel supports the claim as being temporarily absent
