You must send identification if you’re applying for your first bursary funded year.

If you’ve already received the Social Work Bursary in a previous year of your course, you must upload a cover letter saying you’ve already given us the evidence.

Applying for the first time

You must upload your valid passport and birth certificate.

Indefinite leave to enter or indefinite leave to remain stamps shown in an expired passport can be used to prove your settled status as long as it does not indicate an expiry date.

If you need a copy of a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate that's been registered in England or Wales, you can order a copy from the General Register Office by HM Passport Office.

If you need a copy of a Decree Absolute, Final Order or dissolution of a civil partnership, you can contact the court in which the divorce, dissolution or annulment was granted.

The GOV.UK website has a search facility which can be used to find the contact details of the court.

If you do not have a valid passport

UK nationals

If you do not have a valid passport, upload the photocard of your UK driving licence or provisional licence.

If you do not have a passport or driving licence, there is other evidence you can upload.

EU and EEA Nationals

If you're an EU or EEA national you must upload your current National Identity Card.

Non UK, non EU and non EEA nationals

If you're not a UK, EU or EEA national you must upload a current valid passport to support your application.

If you’ve applied to renew your immigration status and your passport is with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) at the time you submit your Social Work Bursary application, you must upload the letter from UKVI which confirms receipt of your application.

You must also upload additional evidence. See the evidence you must upload.

Refugees

If you're a refugee you must upload your most recent UKVI letter and either your valid biometric residence card or your valid UK Travel Document issued by UKVI.

Other acceptable evidence

If you cannot provide any of the evidence we’ve asked for, you must upload a cover letter explaining your situation.

You must also provide 3 recent documents which show your full name and address.

We accept:

  • tenancy agreements
  • Council Tax bills
  • mortgage statements
  • utility bills
  • bank statements
  • government letters
  • benefit letters
  • NHS medical cards

If you're unable to give us any of these, upload anything official with your name and current full address.

Identification for dependants

If you've applied for allowances for your children or adult dependant for the first time, you must upload one form of their identification.

We’ll accept either:

  • an original valid passport
  • an original birth certificate
  • a Child Benefit letter
  • a Child Tax Credit award notice

If you and your children have different surnames, you must upload the long version of their birth certificate. If your name is not listed on your child’s birth certificate, you must upload one of the other acceptable documents.

If you’ve already received the Social Work Bursary in a previous year of your course, you’ll need to upload a cover letter during the application process saying you’ve already given us this identification.
