The PTEC is a standard public transport cost contribution that all Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) students must make to their DSA travel allowance costs. The amount is deducted from the student’s DSA funding that student finance pay directly to a taxi provider. Students are responsible for meeting the PTEC themselves.

NHS Learning Support Fund (NHSLSF) students can claim this back through Travel and Dual Accommodation Expenses (TDAE) for placement travel costs only. The cost of normal travel to university cannot be claimed.

To be eligible to claim PTEC you must:

  • have an approved DSA application with Student Finance
  • have uploaded your DSA1 letter which confirms your PTEC amount

How to apply

You must complete a TDAE application in your NHS LSF account and upload your Student Loans DSA letter as evidence. It must show:

  • your travel recommendation
  • your PTEC figure

If you’re only claiming for PTEC, you must enter £0.00 for the travel to university cost.

For the 2025/26 academic year, PTEC claims are subject to the 6 month deadline.

PTEC claims can be backdated to 1 September 2020 and are not subject to the 6 month deadline. They must be submitted by 31 August 2026.

Once approved, you’ll receive payment within 10 working days.
