If you're a dependent student who was single and you start living with a partner, this will not have any impact on your basic bursary award or change your status to independent. Your basic bursary will still be based on your parents income and expenses.

Complete a Change in Circumstances so we can amend your status to cohabiting and update your address details.

If your partner has a child, this would not automatically class you as independent. You must have legal guardianship or have adopted the child.

You may now qualify for Dependants Allowance for you partner. If your partner has a child who you also now live with, Dependants Allowance can also be claimed for them.

Complete a Change in Circumstances and provide any relevant evidence.

Independent student

If you're an independent student who was single and you start living with a partner, your bursary must be reassessed to include your partner's income and expenses.

Your basic bursary award will be reassessed from the date you started living together to the end of the academic year.

If you were receiving Dependants Allowance or Childcare Allowance (CCA), this must be reassessed from the date you moved in with your partner.

If you were not receiving any Dependants Allowance, you can apply for your partner and any children who are financially dependent on you.

Submit a new application to include your partner's details and provide any requested evidence.

You must include a covering letter confirming the date this change happened and evidence you're now living together.

As part of the assessment of this application, you may notice your application being rejected and a Change of Circumstances being submitted on your behalf on the applicable enrolment period. This is not an indication of any issue with your application. Ignore the generic email you receive from the Change of Circumstances we submit.
